A coat that fits well keeps your dog warm without rubbing, slipping or getting in the way of walking. It only takes three measurements and a soft tape measure.
The 3 measurements you need
- Back length: with your dog standing, measure from the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail.
- Chest: measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. This is usually the most important number.
- Neck: measure around the neck where the collar sits.
Tips for an accurate fit
- Measure with your dog standing, not sitting or lying down.
- Keep the tape snug but not tight. You should be able to slip two fingers underneath.
- Measure twice and write the numbers down.
- Compare your numbers with the sizing info on each product page, since sizes vary by style.
- Between sizes? Go by the chest measurement, and pick the larger size for deep-chested breeds or thick coats.
Which coat is right for your dog?
- Snow and real cold: a lined parka, like the Winter Sailor Dog Parka or the Urban Dog Parka with its sherpa lining and fur-trimmed hood.
- Active dogs on cold days: a lighter puffer such as the Alpine Puffer Dog Jacket or The Puff Dog Parka.
- Two looks in one: the Reversible Chalet Dog Jacket, which is water-resistant and reflective.
- Rain: a waterproof raincoat like the Insulated Dog Raincoat, plus rain boots for muddy paws.
- Cozy days at home: a sweater such as the Chalet Dog Sweater or a Cozy Sherpa Dog Hoodie.
Signs the fit is wrong
- Rubbing or red spots under the front legs
- The coat twists or slides to one side on walks
- Your dog can't sit, lie down or go to the bathroom comfortably
